He delivered a stick of the same length to each servant and instructed them to turn it in the following day. He also mentioned that the stick of the real thief would grow by an inch with the magical touch.
All the servants returned home and kept their sticks because they were innocent. The servant who took the necklace, however, cut it an inch in the hopes that it would grow another inch over night and return to its original state.
The true thief was subsequently apprehended with ease the following morning after all of the servants turned in their sticks to the judge. As a result, the astute judge retrieved the necklace and punished the actual thief by sending him to prison.
